Enough with the August Already

Here's one last post about August.
We eventually made Bob a birthday cake after we got back from Chicago.
Jaide took this picture

Bob's Mom sent him a pair of shorts and a matching apron
Luke had a playdate with one of his little buddies.  They always seem to have similar outfits

A cute picture of Luke having a post church snack

We went to Bob's annual summer work party.  It was at a different place this year, farther south and on our side of the bay.  We had a fun time.

After we ate, Bob and the kids played in the bay.

There were jellyfish

Fortunately no one got stung!

A Quick Trip to Michigan (and Ohio)

On Thursday we headed back east and somewhat north to visit Bob's brother Russell and sister in law Jen.  The kids were very excited to play with their cousins!  Their youngest is two weeks younger than Luke.  Luke is a lucky boy in the close in age boy cousins department.  They made us dinner and then we all got to play in the common area behind their town home.

Thanks for letting us visit guys!  After saying goodbye, we headed back to the same hotel we stayed at on the way out in Strongsville, Oh.  The next day, after a swim in the hotel pool, we finished our trek back and made it home at about 6pm.

A Quick Trip to Chicago: Part 3 Bob's Birthday

This first part is for my sister Kathy.  Kathy has been doing genealogy research on our mom's side of the family lately and she found out that one set of our great great great grandparents are buried in the town that my parents grew up in and where my grandma lives (she also grew up there too).  With the help of the internet I was able to find out which section their grave is in (it's a very large cemetery).  Once we found the section, we split up and looked for clues.
We had a hard time figuring out what this said
I think it's a military marker, indicating his military service
We made a rubbing of it.  I think the bottom line says
177th ILL. INF.
Bob found the grave.  Kathy was wondering if there were any other relatives buried nearby but there weren't so far as we could tell.  She was wondering about great great great great grandpa, but he probably died before this cemetery opened.  We used to come to this cemetery on Memorial day when I was a young teen but I don't think we ever saw this grave.  I asked Little grandma about it and she said she had visited it before (these are her great grand parents).
Some pictures Bob took of us at the grave

There are some cool old monuments in that cemetery

After we found that grave, we decided to visit my paternal grandparents grave site.  I didn't know what section it was in so I just sort of told Bob which direction to go based on my memory.  I told him to stop at one section that looked somewhat familiar and we wandered all around.  I remembered a tree being nearby and Jaide took that description and found the grave.

My grandmother's ashes are buried here as well but she doesn't have a headstone yet
When we were done at the cemetery we stopped for some lunch and then headed over to Little grandma's place.  We played many rounds of uno.  Bob and Luke went to check in at the hotel where we were staying that night and Luke got a nap in.  We hadn't been sure where we would be on Bob's birthday so we hadn't made reservations for that night before we left.  We ended up staying closer to Little grandma's place that night.
Wednesday was the day that my Aunt Cynthia and Uncle Rick were off work so we could spend some time with them.  We all went out for some tasty pizza.  Luke learned how to say pizza during this trip!

After dinner my aunt and uncle took us out for icecream in honor of Bob's birthday.

note the "over the hill" candle in the background

Aunt Cynthia was prepared!  She had some birthday confetti in her purse
left over from her birthday which Bob used to spell out his name
After icecream we had to say goodbye to everyone because we had to leave early the next day to drive to Michigan and then on to Cleveland area.

A Quick Trip to Chicago: part 2 Great America

Since we have season passes to Six Flags this year, we had to make a trip up to Great America.  Great America is up in Gurnee, IL not too far from the Wisconsin border.  This is the amusement park of my youth.  We brought the girls here a few years ago on our last visit to Chicago at Fright Fest time and way back in the summer of 2008 when Kiree was just a baby.
We got to the park at opening time and tried to make the most of it.  It was a good thing because it got crowded as the day went on.  Bob took the girls on the demon.  Kiree was excited to be tall enough to go on a big rollercoaster.  She was less excited after going on it.  That ride does bang your head around quite a bit (hence I was happy to let Bob go on it).  But now Kiree has been on an upside down rollercoaster!  Luke and I wandered a little bit and I saw a newer rollercoaster called x flight that looked like fun.  When I met up with Bob and the girls I took Jaide on that ride.  It was really fun.  Bob got a chance to ride it with Jaide too.  The line got way longer later in the day, so it's a good thing we got on that ride when we did.

Kiree and Luke climbing in the kid area
this was the first ride of the day for Luke

The viper wooden rollercoaster was running backwards and Bob wanted to ride it, but the line was insane all day long (even first thing)!  I was happy I got to take the girls on the roaring rapids (raft ride).  We did get pretty wet but dried out eventually.

We just had to go on the scooby doo ride!  Luke now calls him doo doo.

one of the rides Jaide was too big for these days

Two "adults" couldn't ride in the same berry so Jaide was on her own

We spent a little while at the water park as well.  Kiree decided she did not like most of the water park rides.  She decided to head back down all the stairs we had climbed by herself rather than go down one of the water slides with me.  It wasn't super hot that day so the lines at the water park were pretty much non existent.

Got a picture with Daffy duck

Luke wasn't allowed to ride anything but the sleigh on the carousel and he was not happy about it

We brought some food along and had a lunch picnic in the van.  We decided to head out for dinner.  We decided to cross the border to Wisconsin since no one but me had been there before.  We couldn't seem to find a place to eat nearby so we headed back down to Gurnee to eat at the Gurnee Mills Mall.  It was getting pretty late by the time we were finishing up dinner and we hadn't brought any pjs for Luke or the girls.  I decided to check out the Crazy 8 store and we ended up buying the kids each a pair of pajamas and some other stuff.

Luke was a tired boy.  It was closing time at the mall.
